ONTARIO FISHING DESTINATIONS
SOUTHERN ONTARIO RIVERS
GRAND RIVER
Long known as a classic paddling river and listed as a Canadian Heritage River, the Grand offers up some fantastic smallmouth bass fishing no matter where you plan to fish it. The upper Grand is well known as a world-class brown trout fishery but is not accessible by kayak. The real kayak fishing opportunities start around Kitchener and continue on to Port Maitland at Lake Erie. Mid Grand from Kitchener-Waterloo to Brantford offers great smallmouth fishing, plus northern pike and to a lesser extent walleye. Lower Grand from Paris to Port Maitland is where the diversity of the fishery really starts to show. Catches of steelhead, resident trout, northern pike, and walleye really start to increase.

MAITLAND RIVER
Another excellent smallmouth bass fishery, the Maitland winds through many miles of farmland until it reaches Lake Huron at Goderich. Resident and migratory trout do exist but the river is very susceptible to low water conditions early as April, and the river can become a mere trickle by summer. Best opportunities exist at the town of Goderich.

The Saugeen River in Southern Ontario is an excellent destination for kayak anglers due to its many tributaries of cold and warm water, the Saugeen spills into Lake Huron at Southampton. Affectionately known as "the geen", the river offers steady fishing from May to November. Due mostly to the strong rehabilitation and stocking efforts put forth by the Lake Huron Fishing Club and Ontario Steelheaders organizations. Whether you prefer resident trout fishing, steelhead and migratory trout, or warm water species such as largemouth bass, muskie, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and walleye; the Geen has a season and species to suit everyone!

SOUTHERN ONTARIO GREAT LAKES
LAKE ERIE
The land of 8lbs Smallmouth Bass and big Walleye has lots to offer to kayak anglers. Joined to Lake Huron via the Detroit River on the south end, and to Lake Ontario via the Niagara River on the north end, Ontario anglers have lots of options. BUT choose your days wisely because this lake can and will turn on you in a hurry! Kayak anglers can easily intercept large migratory fish in and around either the Detroit or Niagara Rivers at all different times of year, if they respect the current. Both rivers are in fact not rivers at all but they are straits connecting Great Lakes at either end. That in itself should alert you to the power of these rivers!
The Detroit River is the superhighway of walleye as they migrate from Lake St Clair into Lake Erie at Colchester every spring. Depending on the season there are also excellent opportunities for huge muskie, northern pike, smallmouth bass, silver bass, and many other species.
On the Upper Niagara, the key species are muskie, smallmouth bass, steelhead, and walleye.

LAKE HURON & GEORGIAN BAY
Hardly recognizable as the Chinook Salmon mecca that these two waterbodies were once revered for, there are still thriving steelhead, migratory trout, and walleye populations. The key is locating them. Lake Trout and Walleye are rebounding in a way that people are now starting to view those two species as the primary sportfish. Both are native to these waters. Chinook and Coho are still around but in very limited numbers. You may even get lucky enough to set the hook on a U.S. planted Atlantic Salmon! Northern Ontario around Sault Saint Marie offers up an exceptionally diverse fishery of salmon and trout including Atlantic-Chinook-Coho-Pink-Pinook Salmon, Brown Trout and Steelhead.
LAKE ONTARIO
Home to practically every fresh water species in the Great Lakes, Lake Ontario is a trollers dream. Seeing chinook salmon up to, and excess of 40lbs is not out of the question. Thirty pound fish are regularly caught from late July to September. Screaming reels and sore arms are the call of the day for this salmon and trout fishery! Every river sees its share of migratory fish in spring and fall, making this urban lake a kayak anglers dream.
Northern pike and giant walleye to the east near Bay of Quinte offer another great flavour to this Great Lake.
Niagara River is a whole other animal. Huge salmon, steelhead, brown trout, lake trout, and walleye dominate the Lower Niagara fishery. The Lower Niagara should only be attempted by the experienced!
